As a Pharmacist, It’s Important to Have the Right Footwear ::

Pharmacists spend a lot of time on their feet, so footwear is an important issue. Pharmacists wear all kinds of different footwear, whatever works best for them. If you took an informal poll of what is best to wear, you would get a wide variety of responses – Asics, clogs, cowboy boots, Merrell, Skechers, Vionic, even slippers are a few examples.

For people who stand a long period of time, podiatrists recommend running sneakers that have a lot of support. Sneakers in this category include ones made by Asics and New Balance. They advise against lightweight sneakers that bend easily, such as the Nike minimalist, which don’t offer much support over going barefoot. Footwear should also have a little elevation at the heel.

Styles of Running Shoe

One example of a running sneaker with a great deal of support is the Asics GEL-Nimbus, which offers some of the best shock absorption available. It is also a very comfortable sneaker offering a lot of protection. A New Balance running sneaker that provides similar support is the New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v10. It has firm but responsive cushioning with a sock-like knit of the upper part that keeps the foot firmly in place without feeling uncomfortable. It is also relatively lightweight compared to other models with a lot of cushioning.

Foot Care

Orthotics aren’t needed unless there is some problem with the structure of the foot, such as high arches or flat feet, according to podiatrists. For people with such problems, customized inserts work best.

If you have varicose veins or swelling, compression socks offer good support. Using a moisturizer every day is also good for the feet.

Podiatrists also recommend stretching your calf muscles regularly because they stiffen when not used. One easy way to do this is simply to bend over and touch the floor from a standing position. Another good calf exercise is to stand on the edge of a step with just the balls of the feet, and then raise and drop your heels. Walking is also a good exercise for the feet.
