When applying for a job, the usual process is to provide a resume and a cover letter. The cover letter is important because, like the resume, it helps you to sell yourself to an employer, to advertise what you can offer that no one else can.
But you don’t want the cover letter to simply repeat information contained in the resume. Use the cover letter to expand on the background that you provided in the resume. You can use the cover letter to give the employer a more complete picture of you as a person, explain why you want the job and why you would be the best person for the job.
Because you can use a narrative format in the cover letter, you can make your case much more compelling by telling a story rather than simply listing facts. Use the job description as a reference for the skills that you need to focus on. Do some research on the healthcare organization as well. What you learn may help you to put together a more persuasive letter. Here are a few tips for a top-flight cover letter.
Cut the fat
To keep your cover letter as concise and compelling as possible, cut out any wording that is superfluous, or writing that doesn’t really provide any information. For example, you don’t have to state why you’re writing the letter. The hiring manager already knows why. And you also don’t need to thank the hiring manager for their time. This is all just a waste of space.
Get right to the point
Begin with a first line that will catch the hiring manager’s attention. Explain how you improved the efficiency or workflow at your pharmacy or other healthcare organization or how you increased productivity by improved management. The point is to begin right away to sell yourself.
If you’re having trouble writing an opening that grabs the reader, just start writing whatever comes to mind and continue writing for 15 to 20 minutes. Much of it will be stuff that you cannot use, but you may find in all of the writing a line or two that will say what you want.
Tell a story
Your letter will be much more compelling if you tell a story rather than simply list your skills. Give an anecdote, for example, of how you demonstrated your mastery of the skills in the job description or how you made your biggest accomplishment.
Write several rough drafts
The first words you get down on paper are rarely the most polished. That is why you need to rewrite the letter, possibly several times, until you get it exactly the way you want.
