How To Get Out Of The Pharmacist Job Search Cycle

As a pharmacist, you may be in a job that you just don’t like. It could be that you don’t get along with your supervisor or the workload is just way too heavy or some other problem. You resolve to begin your job search to look for something else.

For about one or two months you peruse the job boards, look online for job openings, network on LinkedIn. You work on your resume and cover letter and send out a lot of applications.

Then you wait and hope. But all of your hard work produces little in the way of results, at most maybe a few interviews. But even they don’t go well because you are not able to provide cogent answers to the questions.

Eventually, your motivation begins to flag, and you begin to resign yourself to your current job. But the problems that made you look for other employment are still there, and just as difficult to tolerate. You resolve to start the job search again, with the same results, leading to a cycle of anxiety and failure.

Why the cycle

You are in the cycle because your job search is inept, and you need to learn how to do it effectively. It begins with establishing some goals for yourself and what you want out of your job and what kind of job you want to focus on.

The next step is deciding where you want to work and who you want to work for and targeting those specific employers. Learn to do in depth research about each employer that interests you. Find out about their leadership, their goals and values, how they operate, and pretty much anything else you can learn about the organization.

Find out who has the responsibility for hiring a new pharmacist and send your resume and cover letter directly to them. Your application materials need to be tailored to the specific health care organization you are applying to. You need to learn how to write an effective resume and cover letter.

Other aspects of the job search to learn about include networking and how to interview.

If you are unsure how to conduct an effective job search, do some research. There is plenty of material online to guide you. Or find help. This could be from a mentor or from a career advisor who can provide coaching.
